LAUNCESTON was the venue for the County U-16 Rugby Sevens Tournament for the ten teams from across the county.
Bude started their group with a game against Helston which they won 43-0. A loss against a strong Newquay team followed, by 31-7 as Bude seemed to lose their way, but thumping wins in their two remaining matches by 59-0 against Liskeard-Looe B, and 55-0 against Saltash put Bude in the Plate final as Group Runners-Up.
So the 15-a-side County Vase winners (Bude) faced the County 15-a side Spoon winners Launceston, and Penzance the County champions from the previous week faced Newquay, the County Plate winners in the main final.
Bude and Launceston were tied at 5-5 after the first few minutes, but Bude then scored three quick tries to lead 26-5 at half time. Bude pulled away in the second half, as Jago Cann scored a hat-trick of tries and Bude were winners by 57-5. It was an exceptional team performance and all of Bude's ten-man squad contributed to a professional and merciless display of Sevens rugby.
Every Bude player scored at least one try in the tournament, except one, Richie Herzog. But it was the votes of his fellow players and the coaches and supporters that gave Richie the 'Player of the Day' for his great hands, commitment and his ability to make the right decision at the right time.
Penzance won the main final by 52-14.
Bude squad: Jago Cann, Rich Herzog, Jona Scacona Spratley, Duncan Tout, Lewis Seaton, Ollie Dell, Kyle Speare, Max Passey, James Savage and Luke Goacher. Thanks to the coaches Roger Tout & Ron (Reluctant Ref) Cann, and Shane Lovejoy for his support and the water bottles !
