BUDE is amongst the towns that are set to benefit from a Government strategy aiming to restore Cornwall's seaside resorts.
'Strategy for seaside success; securing the future of seaside economies' includes a commitment to work with the Heritage Lottery Fund to to find ways to further extend restoration work, create new jobs, support businesses, improve the skills of the long term unemployed and introduce new licencing rules for councils over houses in multiple occupation to tackle problems around low quality seaside housing.
The Government wants to ensure coastal areas are best placed to take advantage of their natural resources and assets, historic infrastructure, and high quality of life, as well as emerging green industries – to develop strong and successful local economies.
A recent case study carried out recognised the need in Bude for improved access to secondary and higher/further education, more 'high-value' employment opportunities and more affordable housing.
Jim Knight, regional minister for the South West, said: "Cornwall can boast some fantastic seaside towns and it is important our coastal areas are able to make the most of the new opportunities. This package of Government support for Cornwall includes £200,000 each to create jobs, support business and improve skills of the long-term unemployed. This Government support, together with strong local leadership and dynamic businesses, will help Cornwall flourish like other seaside towns have elsewhere."
