BUDE Surf Outreach Group (BSOG) recently held a day of surfing activities for disabled young people at Summerleaze beach, with the assistance and resources provided by Raven Surf School.
This year, Kev Hogarth organised a surf session for the After 8 group, young adults who had previously been members of Active 8, a group for young people with physical disabilities in Cornwall.
This year, four young people had a go in the water — Mark, Simon, Ben and Lauren.
Fortunately, the weather was warm and dry and with the low tide, the surf was not too big, but powerful and ripping.
Three members managed to stand up and ride white water all the way to the beach.
Kev said: “We all agreed we had a good time, and after changing in the beach huts, courtesy of Cornwall Council, we went to a local café for hot drinks and to discuss our performance.
“Thanks to RNLI for help transporting young people to water’s edge — Mini, Ross and Dan. As always, massive thanks to Clive Symm, our photographer, who has supported us for seven years.
“Huge thanks to my volunteer helpers who make it possible — Steve Stritch, RNLI lifeguard; Matt Stevenson, Big Blue Surf School; Paul Westaway, RNLI; and John Sweeting, After 8 youth worker. Also, thanks to Emily Crocker from Raven for her superb encouragement and coaching.”
BSOG is a small community charity, providing young people of all abilities in Cornwall with surfing opportunities.
The charity is always keen to hear from volunteer helpers and donations, to enable it to offer more opportunities.
Kev is secretary of the group and can be contacted on 07960 581068 for those who wish to find out more about the group.
