BUDE Rugby Football Club hosted the Coldstream Guards Rugby Club on a sunny Sunday for a friendly Sevens Tournament in aid of Help the Heroes.
The Guards have recently completed a six- month tour in Afghanistan, and this tour was based in the South West, in memory of two of their fallen colleagues, killed in Helmand Province this year.
Both were key members of the Guards Rugby team. They were Lieutenant Douglas Dalzell, and L/Cpl Darren Hicks who was from Cornwall. A moving minute silence followed by The Last Post initiated the proceedings.
Eight teams competed, four from Bude, two from the Coldstream Guards, a scratch team of 'Barbarians' and a team of local teachers.
The Teachers comfortably won their group, but they did include some semi-professional players from Launceston and Plymouth Albion.
The other group pitted the much-awaited clash between Bude 1st team and the Bude Colts (Young Guns).
The youngsters triumphed 29-19, but the Bude Veterans proved a more awkward opposition.
The youngsters tried to match their wily opponents up front, and struggled in the first half and found themselves 12-0 down thanks to two tries by (veteran colt!) Kyle Speare, and some dubious tactics by Jolly Roger Tout!
The Colts pulled two tries back to tie at 12-12, but finally triumphed 19-12 thanks to a late try by Dan Pearce.
This set up a final against the Teachers. An early try by Lewis Seaton gave the Colts a 7-0 lead, but the Teachers hit back to lead 19-7.
Ollie Dell then scored to reduce the deficit to 19-14, before Dan Pearce scored in the corner, but the difficult conversion failed.
With the scores tied at 19-19, the Teachers disappointingly kicked possession away too often, and the clock ran down to leave a drawn result and the trophy was shared.
The day was a family affair with BBQs, face painting, bouncy castle, stocks and an impressive climbing wall, brought to Bude by the Guards.
The celebrations began in the clubhouse after the game and no doubt continued late into the evening.
Bude Young Gun Colts: Joe Wilson, Tom Summers (capt), Jack Regan, Adam Martin, James Adams, Lewis Seaton, Ollie Dell, Dan Pearce, Tim Ames and Pete Mckewon.
