BUDE's Acting Police Sergeant, Kevin Bennett, has urged people who wish to enjoy a drink during this summer's World Cup to act responsibly at all times.

He said: "As we enter the summer period most of us are looking forward to enjoying longer nights and warmer evenings.

"Many of us are also looking forward to the World Cup and watching a few games of football either at home or in our local public houses and drinking establishments.

"Unfortunately, we are all too aware of the inherent problems that sometimes occur surrounding the issue of football and alcohol."

He continued: "I can assure you that Devon and Cornwall police, and in particular the local Bude Policing Team, will deal robustly with any anti-social behaviour.

"It is fair to say that the majority of people soak up the carnival-like atmosphere, are well behaved and enjoy the events.

"For those people who over indulge in public or cause trouble then I would like to draw your attention to section 27 of the 'Violent Crime Reduction Act' of 2006.

"To minimise the risk of alcohol related crime or disorder arising/continuing, police officers can and will issue you with a written notice under this act requesting you leave the area designated by the constable."

He concluded: "This is enforceable for a 48 hour period. Should the notice be ignored you will be arrested and you also run the risk of being banned from local public houses under the Pub Watch Scheme."
