A BUDE man, proud of his family of five generations and recognised for his outstanding gallantry during World War Two, has passed away, aged 92.
The funeral of Reg Philp, born in Stratton in 1919, took place at North Devon Crematorium on Tuesday, February 28 and around 50 family and friends gathered. A member of the Rifle Regiment played The Last Post.
Following his time at Poundstock Primary School, Reg started out as a carpenter and joiner at the Parkhouse. He married Kath Barrett in 1939 and just six weeks after the birth of their first child, Janet, Reg went off to war.
At a young age, he gained significant achievements, chiefly his promotion as Regimental Sergeant Major.
Reg received his fair share of war experiences whilst a dedicated soldier in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry and was highly respected by fellow soldiers for his leadership and bravery.
Operations to help rescue the 1st British Airborne Division, led by Reg, during the summer of 1944 at De Hoop, Arnhem, Netherlands, were commended in 1946, when he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
