IN a weekend of split weather - mid 20s on the Saturday to mid 10s on the Sunday - scoring in the Bude & North Cornwall Golf Club Championship was none the less to a high standard. With the fairways taking on an unfamiliar light brown and the greens appearing as oasis's in the distance, writes Barry Sykes.
The days were split into three groups, the Juniors leading followed by the Ladies and then the Gents.
Jack Wellington led the gross side of the junior weekend with a score of 152 followed by Ryan Curtis and Andrew Troop. In the nett category Lee Gardiner showed the way on 67 followed by the brothers Adam and Ryan Curtis. For his efforts Jack has seen his handicap drop to 5.7 – will he catch brother Harry this summer as Harry is on 5.0?
The men's section was controlled by the single figure boys both in the gross and nett categories. Alex Glover controlled the weekend with a start on the Saturday of gross 68 followed by 75 on the Sunday. He was closely followed by Lawrie Bridges on 145 (73 &72). Spare a thought for Lawrie, who in the past six years has won the Championship twice and been runner-up four times, a cracking record. Twos were a precious commodity over the weekend with only 5 on the Saturday and 3 on the Sunday.
