On May 10, four friends from Bude faced the hazards of cobbled streets, tramlines and blazing sunshine to run the Prague Marathon, raising money for Cancer Research. Will Mitchell, Will Heathcote and Phil and Pete Horton, all ex-pupils of Budehaven School, decided to undertake this challenge in a moment of madness one winter evening. The months of training around local coast paths and lanes paid off when they all successfully completed the run of over 26 miles in the beautiful Czech capital. An unusual sight for many competitors and spectators was the Cornish flag, proudly waved by the lads' supporters at several vantage points around the course to spur them on! This was Will Mitchell's second marathon, having run the New York last November in aid of the children's charity, Whizzkidz. For the others it was their first attempt at the distance. After completing the race the lads had a collective 'Steve Redgrave moment,' unanimously declaring that they never, ever wanted to repeat the experience, but it's amazing what a few days of rest and recuperation can do — they are already planning their next marathon!
There is still time to make a donation to their chosen charity, Cancer Research, and this can be done securely online at: http://www.justgiving.com/prague09">http://www.justgiving.com/prague09. Will, Will, Phil and Pete would be grateful for anything you feel able to give!
