BUDE/Stratton Town Council has decided to turn down an offer of eight water colours by artist Charles H Branscombe (1891 to 1922). The paintings were offered by the family of the late Richard 'Dick' Willoughby, a town councillor.
The paintings have been on display in The Castle Heritage Centre since its opening in July, 2007. The purchase price for all eight, which depict local scenes, would have been £4,300.
The council, meeting on Thursday, decided to decline the offer to purchase.
In a recorded vote, eleven councillors supported a motion that the offer be declined, three opposed it, and there was one abstention.
The family have also offered to the Heritage Centre a collection of books relating to the local area which had belonged to Cllr Richard Willoughby. These have been donated to the centre.
Cllr Willoughby was, at the time of his death on April 2, 2008, the longest serving member of Bude/Stratton Town Council.
As chairman of Bude-Stratton Town Council's Heritage and Culture Committee, he was the champion and project leader for the restoration and refurbishment of The Castle which is now the heritage centre and gallery.
He was a former Bude/Stratton Urban District Councillor and a member of the former North Cornwall District Council. He lived in Bude for 60 years.
