With the intention of helping to bridge the gap between the generations, the Holsworthy branch of the Devon Senior Council recently sponsored a poetry writing competition for the pupils of Bradworthy Primary School.

They were invited to write poems about their grandparents and the winners' names were announced last Thursday at the Bradworthy Community Fun Day.

The winner of the junior section, Chloe Baker, aged 10, received £10, and in equal second place were Luke Home (11), Ashlea Hudson (10), Abbie Heard (11) and Lucy Poole (8), all of whom received £5. All the other 61 entrants were highly commended and received certificates.

There were 43 entries from classes 1 and 2 into the infants section. The winning entry was from Anna Walter (6) who also received £10 and the runner-up was Cara Phillips (7) who received £5. They all made great reading!

The following is Chloe's winning entry:

'Grampie'

With a happy head and heart of gold

My gramps is starting to get old.

We talk quite often on the phone,

Sharing stories of how I've grown.

Crinkle crinkle, his newspaper goes,

Waiting for his racing car shows,

Using his crutches he calls his ski sticks,

That makes me laugh.

'Nanny'

Never moaning, always sunny,

Kind words, sometimes funny,

Cooking fussing, looking after us,

Seldom do we see them — sad for us!

Friday night is for fish and chips,

Off Grampie drives with his ski sticks.

Nanny stays at home, sorting the dishes.

Love you both – lots of good wishes!

The following is Anna's winning entry:

'My Nanny'

My Nanny takes me to the shops

She buys me some orange lolly pops.

My nanny always talks.

She takes me on lots of picnic walks.

My Nanny lets me play

When I come to stay

My Nanny makes me tea

She always plays with me.
