THE second ‘bride-off’ has taken place in Bude — two brides-to-be battled it out to see who could endure standing in a shop window in a wedding dress the longest.

Kate Holder, who lives in Holsworthy, was the last woman standing after 58.5 hours. She had been up against Tara Attis from St Austell.

The competition started at 10.50am on Saturday, and finished at 9.15pm on Monday night. The rules of the competition changed on Sunday to standing only between 7am and 11pm.

The contest was open for six weeks while each bride picked their dream dress, then the two were picked to go head to head.

They had a window each and had to wear a wedding dress at all times. The women had a comfort break every four hours, but did have to stay in the dress.

They had to eat, sleep and drink in the window — each window is approximately 135cm by 40cm.

It is the second such competition for Budeiful Brides wedding shop. Last year it was won after 36 hours.

Budeiful Brides owner Emily Benny said of this year’s competition: “They did find it difficult — it was the sleeping more than anything. Definitely lack of sleep does not help. Cracks started forming on the Monday.

“The end was very dramatic in kind of a really weird way. Tara had secretly messaged her other half to pick her up. I heard lots of commotion from upstairs. Apparently he walked in and she said ‘take me home’ — and he carried her out of the window. Tara had it planned all evening.”

When the record of 36 hours from last year was broken, they had champagne to celebrate.

The winner, Kate, said: “It was really tiring but well worth it. I have big grazes on my hips from sleeping on a bit of wood! It’s all really exciting, I’m just walking around in a daze!

“I wasn’t getting out of that window for anybody. I think we both lasted amazingly well.”

On how the competition came to a close, Kate said: “I couldn’t really understand what was going on. I think she was really missing him, and the fact she has never been away from her children before. I think it was difficult for her because I’m kind of local — one of my friends drove all the way from Westward Ho! to bring me a packet of crisps!

“I always said from the beginning if my name is picked I’m not going home without it!

“It is the difference between having a wedding that is just okay or having the wedding of my dreams.”
