FORMER mayor of Launceston and current town councillor, Brian Hogan, admits he has never played a musical instrument in his life but is delighted to have been elected the new chairman of Launceston Town Band.

During the band’s recent annual meeting, Mike Warne decided to step down from the position after several years but will remain on the committee for the time-being to ensure a smooth transition.

Ewan Murray, the manager of Launceston Tourist Information Centre and a brass player, was elected vice-chairman and will also take on the role of safeguarding officer, having had considerable experience in that role as a teacher.

Speaking about his new appointment in the band’s centenary year, Brian said: “I was asked to attend the AGM of Launceston Town Band this year as I have always been a keen supporter and indeed very proud of our town band.

“I went along, mainly to see if I could help as I had heard that a few of the long standing members wished to take a bit of a break from the full on day-to-day running of the band operations.

“Mike Warne has done a stalwart job as chairman for many years and I am sure that all concerned would like to thank him very much, as indeed I do.

“Anyone that knows me will know that I don’t play any type of instrument, but I am fairly confident that I know people and will be able to help out with whatever is needed. One-hundred years is a real test of time and in this, their centenary year, I would like to say thank you to Launceston Town Band and wish them continued success. I am very proud to be more involved with our town band.”
