MEMBERS of Bude Surf Life Saving Club recently braved the cold to head over to the Bude Canal and take part in an informal time trial, using the club’s surf skis.
Surf skis are now mainly used for racing and leisure, but were originally developed for use in surf rescue. The modern versions are long, narrow and fast, but also fairly unstable. Taking a dip was something they were all trying to avoid, particularly in December.
However, competitors set off on Saturday, December 16, at one-minute intervals, on a two-mile course from the Falcon Bridge up to Rodd’s Bridge, back to the sea lock gate and returning to the start. They then returned to the club house at Crooklets beach for mulled wine and mince pies.
The event was organised by Simon Hammond who is taking over as chair of the club from Adrian (Horace) Parsons this year. The club has extended thanks to Horace for his hard work this year and over the previous seasons.
Bude Surf Life Saving Club is open to all, so for anyone who feels like getting involved, they should get in touch using their website on the Facebook page.
