THE ‘Bude Knicker Fairies’ worked their magic over Mothering Sunday, as lingerie was strung all over the town’s Nanny Moore’s Bridge.
The women of the town rummaged around their homes to pull out their finest new — or nearly new — underwear to donate to the ‘Smalls for All’ charity.
Overall, 198 bras and 271 pairs of knickers were donated to the cause, an excellent result, portraying just how charitable and thoughtful the women of Bude are.
The ‘Smalls for All’ charity was started in 2009 by Maria Macnamara, and encourages people to collect their unwanted underwear so it can be donated to vulnerable women and children living in poverty in Africa, asking that the underwear is new and hardly worn.
The charity helps those in orphanages or IDP camps, as well as those suffering from medical conditions such as fistula. The charity provides clean underwear to women in Third World countries where it is not easily accessible, aiming to make a big difference in terms of hygiene.
As well as this, ‘Smalls for All’ is also collecting funds to help educate a group of children in Kenya, enabling them to create a better future for themselves. They are working closely with other charitable organisations in Africa to ensure they provide help and support to people in the most efficient way possible.
The involvement of the ladies in Bude has shown a great amount of determination to help others in need, and the term ‘women helping women’ has really been enforced by their act of kindness.
With a total of 469 under-garments, the day proved to be very successful and will help the charity ensure many women and children in Africa will be wearing clean and hygienic underwear.
The ‘more used’ bras will go to a breast cancer charity, whereas the used smalls will be recycled
The Knicker Fairies expressed thanks to those who donated any spare change into their donation box on the day.?All of the money will assist the postage to ‘Smalls for All’.
