It had to be Bradworthy Primary School! Having staged the world's largest maypole dance (Guinness World Record) in 2006, it decided to do another first.

On Wednesday, July 15, Year 5 pupils from the school performed two maypole dances (Rainbow Plait and Spider's Web) on the highest point in Devon (and incidentally the south of England).

In a frisky and often damp wind, they walked from Meldon Reservoir up to the top of High Willhays Tor (621m) carrying the maypole and ribbons. On the tor, a flattish, tussocky, boggy patch was found and, in a window of cloudy sunshine, they danced on the top of Devon accompanied by a boisterous breeze and an accordion.

Music teacher David Dawson: "As always at Bradworthy School, the trip was made possible by the generous and enthusiastic support of the parents who drove and climbed and cheered. They were delighted that their children were encouraged to do something so 'random' and 'wicked' as a maypole dance on High Willhays.

"They would have loved to have danced themselves, but it was agreed that the unique privilege of being the first and only people to maypole dance here should stay with the enthusiastic year fives who want to do it again.

"So next is (maybe) Dunkery Beacon (highest in Somerset) or Brown Willy (highest in Cornwall) or Scafell Pike (highest in England) or an underwater maypole dance. Who knows?"
