THREE of the ten Boyton soldiers commemorated on the church war memorial were killed in the Third Battle of Ypres, The Battle of Passchendaele, two on the same day.

Private William Alfred Lawrence of the 6th Bn Somerset Light Infantry died on August 23 1917 aged 23. He was the son of John Jenkin Lawrence and Elizabeth Jane Lawrence of Church Lane, Illogan, Redruth.

Both Lance Corporal Philip Evan Hicks and Private Walter Parnell died on October 4 1917, age 31 and 33 respectively. Mr Hicks was 1st Bn Devonshire Regiment, son of Mary Ann Hicks of Little Bridge, Bridgerule, and husband of Alice Hicks of Northcott Hamlet, Boyton.

Mr Parnell was 1st Bn Devonshire Regiment, son of Robert Parnell, of Boyton, and husband of Lillie F Parnell of 29, St Anne’s Road, Babbacombe, Torquay.

There was a Service of Remembrance in the village last Sunday, August 6, conducted by the Rev Andrew Wilson.
