IT was a very special day for Margaret Whale, as she celebrated her 100th birthday on Wednesday March 9 at Pendruccombe House, Launceston, along with family, friends and staff of the nursing home.
Mrs Whale also received a visit from the mayor Brian Hogan and deputy mayor Margaret Young, and was handed a bouquet of flowers and a card for her special day.
Born in 1916 in Bathpool, North Hill, Margaret has stayed local all her life, moving to Coads Green from North Hill with her parents and brother, to later be joined by a baby sister.
She moved to South Petherwin in later life with her husband, William, whom she married in 1940. There, they brought up their three children: John, Joyce and Mary. Sadly, in 1990, William died.
In 2009, Margaret moved to Pendruccombe House, when her mobility failed her. Her daughter Mary wrote to the Post, explaining how Margaret has always been happy and well cared for at the nursing home, and particularly enjoys the lovely food.
Margaret still has the ability to see and hear well, and often has interesting conversations about ‘the good old days’.
Overall, Margaret had a very enjoyable day, receiving endless bouquets of flowers, cards and gifts from family, friends, staff and, of course, the mayor and deputy mayor of Launceston.
One of the most exciting parts of Margaret’s 100th birthday was receiving happy birthday wishes from the Queen and the Secretary of State, something that both she and her family will treasure.
