A Bodmin pub has issued a warning to punters after a scam post claiming that they were ‘organising a two-day Christmas event’ was circulated on social media.

Emma Dow, landlady of the Garland Ox public inn, on Higher Bore Street, said that there was no two-day event being held at the venue and warned people not to contact the scammer or send them money as requested.

A post from an account named ‘Cynthia Davies’, unaffiliated to the venue, was circulated to groups saying that an ‘annual Christmas fayre’ was coming to the Garland Ox pub between November 25 and November 26, and that there was a call for food vendors to purchase stalls for a price of £40 each.

The post read: “Hello, our annual Christmas fayre is coming closer. We are looking for market stall holders and crafters for our two-day event.  Location: Garland Ox, 65 Higher Bore Street, Bodmin, PL31 1JS.  Date: 25th and 26th November, event time 10am until 5pm.

“A few food vendors required. Do you sell Tupperware, thermomix, homemade preserves or jam? Do you have a small business that you’d love to showcase at our event?

“Book your stall early at £40 each, PM (private message) me for further details.”

However, Ms Dow has confirmed there is no event booked in, nor was one organised by the pub.

She said: “I’d like to confirm this has nothing to do with the Garland Ox, there isn’t an event of that kind booked in and there almost certainly wouldn’t be.

“Any events organised by ourselves, or others would be featured on our official Garland Ox Facebook pages and groups, as well as in and around the venue, or shared by myself or one of our staff to local media groups.

“There is no Cynthia Davies connected to the Garland Ox and this is a scam where I can only presume, they take your money for an event that doesn’t exist.

“It’s sad to see the name of our venue has been used in this way, but I can assure people that if it hasn’t come from myself, our staff or our page, it isn’t true and if anyone has any doubts, they are welcome to contact us or pop in and enjoy our own events which unlike this, do exist.”
