THE week started well, at least for Holsworthy Golf Club President, Gordon Dimbleby, whose team had previously in the last two years lost out to the respective captain's team in the annual challenge.
Current captain, Trevor Watters, with secretary, Geoff Young, led off against Gordon and Dan Wood, in his first competition since joining the club as professional and how well they did, playing great team golf to register a 3 points to nil win, getting Trevor's selection off to a flying start. From then on the lead changed hands many times with the final result decided by the last of the 14 matches to make it a win for the president's team by 21½ points to 20½. The winning team members each received two golf balls, as was the custom, with Phil Heal and Syd Pearce each winning 24 more for recording the only 2s of the day.
The following day was scheduled to be the return leg of the Emerton Court County Championship, which had to be postponed due to the prevailing conditions.
However, Tuesday saw the return of suitable weather for the ladies' roll up, the WGA Medal and Eclectic round with Gwen Adams again making her presence felt, her nett 69 pipping by one shot lady captain, Yvonne Bowler, with Ruth Bennett a creditable third with a 73. Ely Walmsley and Carole Baker birdied the fourth and eighth holes respectively.
It's sad that you cannot have your cake and eat it, which proved to be true on Veterans' Day. Bob Bentham celebrated becoming a pensioner, receiving the good wishes of his colleagues and a cake which was enjoyed by all particularly Ian Hemmings who had a nett 68, the best of the day and Division I with Chris Woolley second 69 and Ray Holness 70 third. John Bullman's 70 was top of the Division II players with countback separating Graham Makin and Ben Tole both with 71s to take second and third places respectively.
Newcomers to Holsworthy friendly matches were St Kew, making their first ever visit to Holsworthy only for them to return home the losers by 5 games to one. Captain, Tony Tomassi and Peter Hoyland did put a smile on St Kew's leading pair, going down 2&1, however that was their only success, with wins by Albert Taylor and Tony Downing, 6&5, Eric Lake and Trevor Hayne, making his first appearance for the veterans, 2&1, Chris Woolley and David Smith, 3&2, Bob Gelder and Brian Bowler, 5&4 and finally Allan Richardson and Ian Hemmings, 7&5 to make it a decisive win.
