THE Charles Causley Trust held the first of their two events, a plaque unveiling, at this year’s Causley Festival in Launceston on Friday.
After an interesting discussion with the new writer-in-residence, Karen Hayes, at the Guildhall, the audience walked down to Cyprus Well for a private tour with the officer for the trust, Jennifer McDerra and vice-chair, Malcolm Wright.
The group was joined by mayor Brian Hogan and his wife for the unveiling of a new plaque which reads: ‘Charles Causley ‘Poet’ lived here 1952 – 2003’ and a quote from Causley’s poem I Am the Song which reads: ‘I am the word that speaks the man’.
Jane Darke read Eden Rock to mark the occasion, and Karen Hayes read Kelly Wood, while Jennifer McDerra read a selection of poems relating to rooms in the house and garden.
The mood was thoughtful and there was an air of contentment as the group climbed back up Ridgegrove Hill to join the rest of the festival.
The plaque marks an important step in the consolidation of a legacy for a man worth remembering for many years to come.
