A BLUE Flag is now flying at Widemouth — the international standard for the best beaches in the world.

The Post reported last week that Widemouth Bay had just been awarded its first Blue Flag, while Crooklets and Summerleaze beaches both won impressive Seaside Awards for their water quality, facilities and management.

The Blue Flag was applied for by the Widemouth Task Force, an 800-strong group that dedicates itself to keeping Bude's beaches clear of marine litter. Ado Shorland raised the money for the application by approaching local businesses.

The Seaside Awards for Summerleaze and Crooklets beaches were similarly paid for by contributions from local businesses and individuals.

Crooklets Beach management committee raised money to pay for the application with a JustGiving page. They smashed their target within days, leaving money in the pot to pay for a Blue Flag application next year.

Martin Dorey from Crooklets Beach management committee said: "All of the town's major beaches won prestigious Keep Britain Tidy beach awards, with three Seaside Awards and one Blue Flag award."
