A CAPACITY congregation of over 1,100 packed Truro Cathedral on Saturday for the annual Ordination service in which the Bishop ordains new Deacons — those on their way to becoming priests.
For the fourth year in succession, the Diocese of Truro, which covers the whole of Cornwall and the Isles of Scily, as well as a small number of parishes on the Devon border, has seen an increase in the numbers of those coming forward for training for priesthood, and Bishop Tim, assisted by the Bishop of St Germans, the Rt Revd Roy Screech, ordained 13 new Deacons on Saturday, who will serve in the parishes from which they have been selected, situated all over Cornwall.
In the 'Post' area, there are three new Deacons, Mary Williamson who will serve in the parish of Launceston; George Darby who will serve in the parishes of Egloskerry, North Petherwin, Tremaine and Tresmere and Trewen, and Jonathan Mosedale who will be the new Curate in the parishes of St Minver with St Enodoc and St Michael Rock, St Endellion, Port Isaac and St Kew.
Usually Deacons complete at least one year in their first curacy, and then the Bishop will ordain them as Priests — though not always to continue to serve in the same parish. The period as a deacon is an opportunity to learn the practicalities of their ministry, helped by the ministry teams in their parishes, or deaneries.
Priests in the Diocese of Truro are ordained in one of the parish churches in which they will serve, and the two Bishops have been visiting North Cornwall during the past few days. Bishop Tim celebrated the ordination to the priesthood of The Revd Michael Parsons at Minster Church, on Sunday, in the presence of a packed congregation many of whom had come to enjoy the superb Flower Festival.
On the same day, Bishop Roy was at Week St Mary Church for the ordination to the priesthood of Revd James Rugg, and former Launceston teacher Revd Richard Ward-Smith.
Both of these have been exercising their Deacons' ministry in the Week St Mary Circle of parishes during the past year; now, as priests, they can also celebrate Holy Communion. To complete the local ordinations, which are always a cause of great celebration for the communities which have supported the candidates, Bishop Roy was at Tintagel on Monday for the Ordination to the priesthood of Revd John Henry Barfoot.A CAPACITY congregation of over 1,100 packed Truro Cathedral on Saturday for the annual Ordination service in which the Bishop ordains new Deacons — those on their way to becoming priests.
