SIXTY players took to the links for the Annual Horniwink Shield at Bude & North Cornwall Golf Club, writes Barry Sykes.
Organised by the seniors from Bradworthy a very successful day was had with a round of golf followed by an excellent carvery and a few ales to replenish the hard work to the inner body works.
With the prize table split into three categories there was a chance for all levels of golfer to win something on the day. Top man was Paul Stephens – a member at Saunton Golf Club. Paul returned 40pts off his 16 handicap closely followed by Dan Balsdon 39pts points off his 5 handicap. Oh what a joy to see,
Norman dancing on the tee, and junior driving long and wide holding back he can't abide. So, if you are ever on the links Beware, stand aside for the Horniwinks. At the presentation organisers Ian Downing, John Barker and Mike (the post) Jennings thanked all those who played – the start of another golfing year.
Category 1: 40 Paul Stephens; 39 Dan Balsdon.
Category 11: 38 Shaun Gifford; 35 Lester Bird.
Category III: 37 Robby Harris; 36 Anthony Gifford.
February Extra Medal —The last day of February saw a smaller than normal field of only 25 players considering the weather conditions. A mild wind free day to see out a very cold month and hopes of better things to come.
The top five places went to the single figure boys with Club Captain Steve Bartrop seeing off his year in office with a fine nett 69 and a good win. The top group are all in the Sunday final round of this year's Tom Morris so let's hope their form carries over to March.
Drop off of the day must go to two players who were seen teeing off from the yellows on one of the tees only to be advised by their playing partner that they should have played off the whites! Did their playing partner have an extra £1 on the day's sweep stake?
69 Steve Bartrop; 70 Mark Biggs; 70 Jim Ryan; 70 Darrell Troop; 71 Martin Bell;
71 Alan Pearce; 71 Paul Nicholas; 71 Graham Barker.
