SOME of the Launceston branch of the Royal British Legion met on Saturday, in the town square with the Rev Mary Williamson, mayor Cllr Brian Hogan, and members from the Launceston Rotary Club.

The Rev Williamson dedicated the RBL Garden of Remembrance at the war memorial, and poppy crosses were laid to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in two world wars and other conflicts.

The focus then shifted to the dedication of the two new commemorative benches, one of which has been funded by the Edymead Trust on behalf of the Launceston branch of the RBL, and the other by Launceston Rotary Club.

A presentation was made by Cllr Hogan to Ann Gynn, Poppy Appeal organiser for Launceston and RBL?branch secretary, of a ceramic poppy from the display at the Tower of London in 2014.

Members of the RBL were surprised and delighted with this gift, complete with its own display case, which will be proudly put on show at the Legion headquarters, Edymead, in Westgate Street.

Thanks were expressed to all who braved a wet morning to take part in the dedications, including Tim Greasby with his World War Two jeep, and poppy appeal collectors Ian and Keith Henry, plus the Launceston Army Cadets who were manning a collection at Lidl’s store on Hurdon Road.
