A REQUEST was received from the St Thomas Church, Tower Bell ringing fraternity archivist Mr Alan Regin who supplied supporting documents for a memorial ring.

Bell ringers from around Launceston gathered at 10.45am in the tower, prior to a Sunday service, and rang the bells of St Thomas as a dedication in memory of Richard Medland, who died on the battlefields of WW1 on June 5, 1916.

Richard lived with his parents Edwin and Mary Medland at Carboth. This residence is still situated at the top of Carboth Lane, off Western Road.

Richard was baptised in St Thomas Church and attended regularly, becoming a member of the Truro Guild of ringers and a ringing member at St Thomas.

A carpenter by trade, he emigrated to Canada, enlisting in the Canadian mounted rifles in January 1915, he was sadly killed around Hooge Belgium, age 23.

He is commemorated at Ypres, Menin Gate, memorial and also on the wall plaque in St Thomas Church.

Those ringing, Tracey Hillman, on treble bell, Mike Aunger, Terry Duke, Jim Elliott, Ben Hicks and Jonathan Striplin, on tenor bell.

It is likely the ancestors of the ringers would have known Richard and his family
