TO commemorate the upcoming 100-year anniversary since the Battle of Jutland during World War One, the Bude, Stratton and Marhamchurch branches of the Royal British Legion are holding a commemoration event over the May Bank Holiday weekend.

The Battle of Jutland took place between May 30, and June 1, 1916, in the North Sea close to Denmark where over 250 ships were involved in the battle with over 100,000 brave men serving their respective countries.

The devastation caused was sickening as over 6,500 British servicemen were killed along with 2,500 of their German counterparts.

Hundreds more were also wounded and left emotionally scarred as both countries claimed the victory although the damage caused to the German High Seas Fleet was such that the Germans avoided fleet-to-fleet engagements for the remainder of the war.

As the 100th anniversary of those dark three days comes ever closer, a commemoration will be held from Saturday to Bank Holiday Monday at St Marwennes Church in Marhamchurch.

Each day will run from 10am to 4pm where a display of memorabilia and artefacts will be open for the public.

A particularly poignant occasion will be the service of remembrance that has been organised by Bude District Old Society to be held in the church from 2pm on Sunday.

The Royal British Legion is the biggest charity for the armed forces in the country, providing support for families affected by war both past and present.
