THE letter published in the Review April 10 seems to suggest that UKIP is claiming to be defenders of Magna Carta.

Nothing could be further from the truth – Magna Carta is about liberty. The 25 barons co-operated with bishops and others to establish a set of rules and regulations within which they all would be governed, in very much the same way that the countries of Europe have agreed various charters and treaties as well as the establishment of a governance structure – it is called the European Union.

If the individual barons had failed to co-operate there would have been further wars within Great Britain and between Britain and other European powers.

Perhaps the same would have been true in the latter half of the 20th century without the European Union. I will be celebrating the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta by cycling 800 miles, visiting each of the baron towns from Somerset to Northumberland between June 20 and June 28, proud to celebrate the co-operation of disparate populations in a single cause to keep the peace and deliver economic prosperity.

I will be raising money for Dorothy House Hospice and Re-cycle bikes for Africa. If you would like to sponsor me please go to this webpage http://www.justgiving.com/">www.justgiving.com/ Lance-Allan2/ –
