KEITH Sutherland from St Giles was honoured to play at Menin Gate in Ypres on the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

Following the emotional event, Keith said: “We’ve taken part in the evening parade in Ypres. The Last Post is played here every evening but this was perhaps a bit bigger than usual but poignant as always, playing under Menin Gate with 15 other pipers is another highlight.”

The following day each member attended a different cemetery whilst in Ypres and playing ‘The Battles O’er’ at exactly 6am — 100 years after the Armistice was signed.

Keith said: “At 6am I joined a couple of thousand pipers to play the retreat The Battles O’er at cemeteries and war memorials all around the world. For no particular reason or connection I went to the Divisional Collecting Post cemetery in West Vlaanderen.

“This was as emotional as it’s been so far, not a soul around other than the 253 at rest. I signed the register — the battle’s over lads, thank you.”
