TEIGNMOUTH may have just won a 'high profile' Seaside Award, but the resort is still locked in a battle to ensure the seawater meets stringent new EU pollution standards.

If the main beach water quality is not improved, it would mean notices being erected advising against bathing, which could be a hammerblow to the tourist trade.

Teignbridge Council, the town council, the Environment Agency and South West Water are working flat out to minimise pollution going into the sea, and hope it will be enough to meet the tougher regulations which come into force next year.
