A WOMAN from Lewannick has been presented with a Cornwall Council Civic Award for her ‘outstanding action’, which helped save a seven-month-old boy’s life.

On Thursday, April 5, Karon responded to a neighbour in crisis. She was nominated for the award by Liberal Democrat Cornwall Councillor Adrian Parsons for Altarnun after she aided her neighbour, whose seven-month-old son was unresponsive.

Cllr Parsons said: “I was very pleased to nominate Karon McRae-Powell from Lewannick for a Cornwall Council Civic Award for her outstanding actions by responding to a neighbour in crisis.

“Rowan, who was only seven months old, had become unresponsive and stiff so his mum banged on Karon’s door asking for help whilst the family waited for an ambulance. Karon immediately took charge of the situation and started to try to resuscitate Rowan and thankfully after a short while he cried out to everyone’s relief.

“She was incredibly reassuring to the whole family, who were obviously distraught, and stayed with them to make sure everything was okay until the ambulance arrived. Karon is a very deserving recipient of this civic award.”

The chairman of Cornwall Council, Cllr Mary May presented Civic Awards to 34 worthy recipients at a reception at County Hall. The awards are held annually and give members the opportunity to pay tribute to the inspirational people in their communities who really do make a difference, with each councillor having the opportunity to nominate the recipients.

Cllr May said: “Cornwall has the very best people — people who give and keep on giving to their communities not for personal gain but to improve the lives of others. Both I and my fellow councillors are truly grateful to them for all they do and are delighted to be able to say ‘thank you’.”
