Adrian, 37, first started writing during a tour of duty in Kosovo. He used it as a form of relaxation and escapism from the pressures of conflict. After leaving the Army he became a long distance lorry driver and used to spend time writing in his truck and that is where he penned his current novel, ‘The Helland Reckoning’ which is the title secured by Crooked Cat.
Adrian said: “Over time I realised I wanted to become a writer which led to me joining the English, Literature and Creative Writing diploma at Cornwall College Saltash. I love it; the course is a lot more in-depth than I thought it would be. We are currently covering the history of language, which I find fascinating. It is opening my eyes to a lot and it is helping me build on my existing skills. I would definitely recommend the course to others, it has been really worthwhile.”
The novel is a supernatural horror set in Helland on Bodmin Moor. The main character has twin daughters and one of them goes missing; when a stranger turns up wanting to help questions are asked and a lot of secrets from the past are discovered.
Adrian continued: “I stayed in Helland a lot when I was a child and for some reason that place has always stuck with me. I visited several times to make sure I got the details right!
“I’m really proud of what I have achieved, after so long of trying I was focusing purely on my course when I got the call just before Christmas to say I had secured a publishing deal. I have another novel on the go now, and have accepted a place at UCP Marjon on their creative writing degree. My long term goal is to become a teacher as well as write.”
‘The Helland Reckoning’ is due to be released as an e-book in the summer and as a paperback towards the end of the year.
