ARTIST Shan Miller displayed her life-size paintings of animals at Holsworthy Market yesterday (Wednesday).

Torrington-based Shan, paints in the style of the Old Master era, with pieces of work ranging from 3ft to 7ft in size.

“People have got to stand back to take it all in,” she explained.

She paints pigs, sheep, cows and also dogs — all of which were dotted around the market.

In 2001, following the outbreak of foot and mouth disease, Shan was commissioned by the NFU to produce some farming portraits to help bring people back into the farming community.

A selection of Shan’s current paintings is on display at the Salar Gallery in Hatherleigh. It was here that the first showing of Shan’s Celebration of the Farmyard exhibition took place, following the outbreak of foot and mouth in 2001, before it toured the rest of the country.

Shan attended the market herself yesterday to chat to those in attendance and was hoping to take along some sketchbooks.

She is hoping to return to Holsworthy for the rare breeds market in May.
