AN artisan bakery in Launceston is celebrating success, after being named ‘best independent retailer’ at the Cornwall Life Food and Drink Awards.

The Little Bakehouse was shortlisted for the category alongside Etheringtons and Great Cornish Food Store.

Little Bakehouse owners, husband and wife Phil and Suzanne Hiscott, were shocked to be named winners at a glamorous awards ceremony at the Eden Project last Thursday, September 14.

Suzanne said they were unaware beforehand they would be named winners — Phil was convinced Great Cornish Food Store would be given the prize.

Suzanne said: “It was a complete surprise. We were hoping, of course. The last time we were nominated was in 2015 and we didn’t get it that time, we were runners up.

“We kind of hoped, but weren’t expecting. We are chuffed to bits!”

The awards were designed to showcase the great and the good in Cornwall, and reward the hardworking people behind them, including suppliers and producers, small farming businesses, chefs, restaurants, pubs and hoteliers.

Suzanne added: “It was lovely meeting some new people in different fields but still within the food and drink industry.”

The Litthe Bakehouse’s inspiration is wanting to keep good food simple, with a nice ambience. They keep their bread healthy and strive to be a good home of Cornish sourdough.
