Just a few miles away in the middle of Bodmin Moor, the team at Jamaica Inn found themselves plastered across national media as they made makeshift beds for what is now thought to have been 150 people on Thursday night.
The people crammed into the inn after being trapped by snow on Bodmin Moor.
The first snow-hit travellers arrived on Thursday afternoon, but some were still making their way on Friday.
Sammy Wheeler, general manager of Jamaica Inn, said: “We wanted to help people in whatever way we could, and thankfully we were able to because we were in prime location with all the chaos happening on the roads outside.
“We decided to open our doors and there was no other reason for doing it, really, other than wanting to help people.”
Once the rooms of the hotel were fully booked, the team made room in the lower restaurant area to create makeshift beds out of pillows, towels, covers, and whatever they could find.
The inn did not charge the 150 people welcomed into the inn for the night, who slept in the lower restaurant area, but many of the guests did decide to donate a contribution.
“I’d like to thank all the staff there on the night,” Sammy added. “Which includes David Baillie, April Dawe, Charlotte Barron, Ashley Brown, Jayne Parker, Julie Greenhaulgh and Tina Wright.”
By Friday morning Jamaica Inn’s maintenance team was transporting motorists to their cars in the pub’s 4x4 as well as shovelling ice from the nearby road.
