THE very cold weather, coupled with winter illnesses, reduced the Bude Valley Volunteers’ numbers to four, plus two Cormac employees, for the recent Warbstow Bury uncovering.

Nevertheless, removing invasive gorse bushes from Warbstow Bury soon warmed everyone up. A 100-yard section of the lowest of the three ramparts of this important multivallate, late Iron Age hillfort was soon cleared.

Another visit next year should see the whole of the part of the fort cleared, making appreciation of the size and extent much clearer to visitors.

The volunteers were soon enjoying the benefits of a roaring fire, as they burned the gorse on iron sheeting to protect the archaeology.

Anyone wishing to help this important work to protect local heritage features would be welcome. An email circulation alerts all the volunteers to forthcoming events. Subscribe by emailing [email protected]
