LOOKING for a new home, a Bible dating to the 1800s has made its way into the Post’s possession and its owner would like to see it find its way back to the original owners — if they can be found.
Paul Edwards, who lives in Doncaster, Yorkshire, with connections to Launceston, said he came across the book in an antiques fair.
Paul said: “We were at an antiques fair looking for red coloured, old books because at the time we had a period cottage and we wanted books like this to fill book shelves and nooks and crannies — something that would fit in with the building’s look.
“We have now moved to a modern house and want to find the book a new home if we can.”
Paul said the Bible, which contains the Old and New Testaments and is dated 1892 [M.DCCC.XCII], appears to have a local connection to the Post area as a number of family names have been hand written inside denoting births, marriages and deaths.
Some of the family names mentioned include:
On a page entitled ‘Family Register’ it reads: ‘John Williams Payne and Grace Thomas Payne were united Holy Matrimony on Saturday the 24th day of December 1892 at Lelant Parish Church.”
This is followed by a number of births: John Williams Payne, June 25, 1869; Grace Thomas Payne, February 24, 1867; William Payne, October 29, 1893; Martha Olive Payne, May 25, 1896; Grace Miriam Payne, September 29, 1898; John Payne, October 20, 1899; Samuel Payne, January 29, 1905; John William Payne, June 24, 1922.
“I carried out a bit of research on ancestry.com and all the names I saw seemed to link back to the area,” Paul said.
“The pictures and writing is beautifully done and to me it looks as though the Bible would have once belonged to a wealthy family as I imagine a book like that wouldn’t have been cheap in its day.”
Paul said he is keen to see the Bible make its way back into its original owner’s hands — or their descendants — if possible.
He added: “It’s a South West book and it can go back to the South West. If you can, you can. I’m sure you will be able to find it a home.”
Do any of our readers recognise those named in the Bible?
