THIS year’s Tintagel Carnival Week got off to a rolling start with the annual fancy dress wheelbarrow race on Saturday, July 27.
The evening’s racing started with the under 12’s race. The competitors raced around the Mayfair Car Park performing tasks as they ran, including zig zag poles, apple bobbing and star jumping followed by a complete circuit at full speed. With the crowd cheering on the participants, the race was won by Joe and Dexter followed by Ollie and Cory and third went to Lily and Lucia with the best fancy dress wheelbarrow won by William and Charlie.
Then came the big race of the evening, the over 18’s race. With six teams entered, the race started at Tintagel Visitor Centre, the field dashed to the first refreshment stop at the Tintagel Arms, then on to the Cornishman, Wootons Hotel, turn and drink at the old Country Club Car Park. Further refreshment was taken at the Malt House and finally the King Arthur Arms with a final mad dash to the finish at Trevena Square. A very exciting men’s race was won by Ollie and Adam as ‘The Wallymen’, followed by Richard and Shane as ‘Aliens’ and third place went to Tolan and Stuart as ‘Cowboys’. The women’s race was won by Jane and Malcolm as ‘Batman and Robin’. The best fancy dress wheelbarrow prize was won by The Major Vena as an army tank.
After the race Phil Aston, of the Tintagel carnival committee, said: “What a fantastic evening. A big thank you to all the entrants, committee members and supported for organising the evening, the local village pubs for helping with refreshments and all the people who lined Fore Street encouraging the runners and helping raise money for carnival funds. We have a full week of events before the grand carnival parade on Saturday, August 3. Come along and support our events and we look forward to seeing you all next Saturday.”
