THE finals of the Bude Tennis Club Summer Tournaments have been taking place over recent weekends, writes Joan Coney.

The first Saturday saw the Men's Singles Handicap final between Gary Bickle and Matt Bosustow, both playing off the same handicap of minus 50. Gary was the winner of this encounter in two straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.

At the same time, Gretel Shaw and Ann Mason played the Ladies Level Singles final. Gretel started strongly and won the first set, but Ann's consistency paid off and she won the next two sets, thus retaining the trophy. Final score 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

This was followed on the Sunday by the Mixed Doubles final between Mike Barnard/ Penny Harris and Charles Axtell/Ann Mason. The handicaps were the same (-15). Despite Mike and Penny putting up a really determined fight, they were unable to overcome the much improved Charles and ladies champion Ann, who won in two sets 7-5, 6-3.
