THE Valency Valley became renowned when its river was the main cause of the Boscastle flood in 2004, writes John Pearce.

The subsequent repairs and restoration were extensive but for some reason didn't reach as far as an important ancient lane passing between Newmills on the north bank and Treworld on the south side, cutting off the two hamlets from each other.

The river crossing at this point was originally a ford with large granite blocks on the river bed. Some of these unusually large blocks, together with the bridge were washed away in the flood.

The bridge was replaced but for some reason the lane was left unrestored and impassable, perhaps because the damage was so bad with holes as deep as eight foot.
