"MAKING a positive contribution to the community makes young people feel good about themselves," with these words Tony Hogg, Police Crime Commissioner for Devon and Cornwall, presented a number of Awards at Community Action Through Sport (CATS) ninth awards evening at the Parkhouse Centre, Bude, on St George's Day.
The Commissioner, who was one of a quartet of celebrities who presented awards, said that society today needs to listen to what young people have to say: "Young people are mostly the solution to problems of anti-social behaviour these days, not the problem," he said "and we need to listen to them, and to what they have to say about life around them."
Over 100 awards were presented this year, thanks to the generosity of CATS Partners, the sports providers of the area, without whom it would be hard to achieve the success of the programme, which began in Bude nine years ago and is now being rolled out across Devon and Cornwall and beyond, as local trustee Jeremy Dowling explained in his opening remarks.
