FIREWORKS are to go ahead at celebrations marking the Queen’s 90th birthday this year.

Bude-Stratton?Town Council’s heritage and culture committee made the recommendation at its meeting last Thursday. The fireworks display is likely to be held on the Downs.

Committee chairman Cllr Alan Biggs said: “There has been a meeting recently with insurers, and everything is being submitted this week.”

A beacon will also be lit as part of the celebrations — work is being carried out to the woodwork to make it suitable.

There will also be checks on the gas supply, to make sure it is safe to go ahead with the display. However, this service ‘may include an additional cost’, said Cllr Biggs.

• A request by the RNLI to use Bude Heritage Centre’s shipwrecks slideshow was also discussed by the council’s heritage and culture committee.

There will be a small cost required to supply the correct software in order for the machine to run, as the file format it has is incompatible.

But there were concerns that the cost might be high. Committee chairman Alan Biggs said: “We will need to come up with a cost figure first. If it is something relatively cheap, we could look into the matter further. However, if it’s going to cost a few hundred pounds, then maybe not.”

The company which deals with audio visual issues will be approached for costs, and it is hoped that there will be progression made by RNLI Day.
