THE?Cornish All Blacks dominated this Cornish local derby scoring five tries to gain five points to put a dent in the 20 point RFU deduction imposed before the start of the season.
However, a good part of the first half was evenly contested before Redruth had three sin-binnings before the interval.
Redruth fly half Aaron Penberthy and home centre Ryan Westren both missed early kickable penalty shots, Westren twice, before the All Blacks changed their kicker to full back Mal Roberts. Westren, though, made up for his early misses by scoring a hat-trick of tries and earning the man of the match award.
The Reds struck first, their play largely limited to fierce ruck-and-runs and when The All Blacks failed to release in the 18th minute Penberthy landed a superb penalty from half way, in off the upright. His sides' self inflicted wounds now began. Open side flanker Owen Hambly was sin-binned for deliberately killing the ball and Roberts levelled the scores with the ensuing penalty.
The All Blacks had soon gone into a lead they were never to loose. Their three quarters were moving into top gear, spinning the ball left and right with fly half Steve Perry orchestrating the attacks nicely with swift transfer and judicious kicks through and for the touch.
From one of these moves Westren went over on the left with Roberts converting.
Penberthy missed another penalty and just before the interval Reds lock Luke Collins was yellow carded for foul play, Roberts again punishing the visitors with another penalty superbly bulleted over from halfway and deep into injury time Collins' fellow second rower Damien Cook was also sin-binned for foul play.
At half time the All Blacks were 13-3 up.
The second half saw The All Blacks in almost total control.
Within a minute Roberts had landed his third penalty when a scrum was brought down and now the All Blacks really started to open it up.
The Reds were trying to break through in midfield, the ball bobbled into the air and Westren was on hand to snatch it, shoot through the melee and run clear to the posts with a despairing defence in pursuit. Roberts converted.
Redruth made changes up front and behind but it made no difference.
In the 52nd minute Launceston were 28-3 up when a long diagonal kick was followed up with blitzing pace by wing Richard Bright who caught it on the full and scorched to the line.
The conversion failed but now the Launceston speed-machine behind the pack was into fifth gear. They made a couple of changes and had scrum half Lewis Webb yellow carded but you would never have known it because their strength seemed unimpaired.
The Reds did battle hard in midfield and tried to mount attacks in the backs but they were nearly all scotched until in the 67th minute they went over for their first try, Collins now back on, broke off and dived over wide-out for Penberthy to convert.
The All Blacks with eight minutes to go were relishing their attacking prowess, driving, rucking, mauling and inter-passing entertainingly.
The next try was Westren's hat-trick when he raced after and latched onto a neat chip through by Perry to score under the posts, Roberts converting, 35-10.
The All Blacks made it 40 points when Westren shot down the left wing and passed neatly inside to replacement wing Kieron Lewitt who raced over.
The Reds did manage a late second and consolation try right on time. After a move down the middle in the home 22 full back Richie Kevern was driven over in the corner. The conversion was wide.
