CRACKINGTON Haven’s Alfred Tilley celebrated his 100th birthday on Wednesday, July 26.

Among the many cards was one from the Queen, a telegram from the Secretary of State and a hand-signed card from his eldest sister Lottie, who died peacefully just one week before at the age of 101.

Both Alfred and Lottie had been born and raised in Crackington Haven and lived locally ever since.

Alfred had the honour of opening the St Gennys and District Horticultural Show on Friday, July 28. He was a keen exhibitor in his earlier days, winning the cup in the vegetable section!

Despite reaching 100, Alfred still grows his own tomatoes and prefers home cooking!

Alfred published his memoirs last year and his book — A Century of Change — which is his life story and also includes some local history of Crackington, is available from Spencer Thorn in Bude and other local stores in St Gennys.
