THE Advent Horse and Dog Show will not go ahead this year, due to a lack of volunteers and interest.
Held at Crowdy Reservoir, near Camelford, the show is widely regarded as one of the most highly anticipated and popular events in the area, and has been taking place for over 50 years — each year on the May bank holiday weekend.
With activities, stalls and some of the finest food and drink on offer, the show includes a horse show, a dog show and Gymkhana events. Any profit made is spent within the Advent parish.
According to the event’s website, the 2015 show was one of the most successful, having raised approximately £1,000 for local charities.
In June 2015, at their AGM, a new show committee was formed. However, after lots of hard work, the 2016 show was cancelled due to poor weather.
However, this year’s show has been cancelled due to a lack of ‘reliable volunteers’, and interest in assisting with the organisation of the event.
On the website, it states: “We are very sorry to announce that due to a lack of (people) interested in assisting to run the show this year, it will have to be cancelled.
“It has been an amazing show throughout the years, with a beautiful outdoor venue. If anyone is interested in helping to organise the show for 2018, please get in touch. Unfortunately, if no interest is shown, the show may no longer run.”
President, Ruth Henderson, told the Post: “The reason it’s not happening this year is because we don’t have enough reliable volunteers and most of the committee want to hand it over to new blood. We are hoping RDA may get involved next year.”
The show’s website states that anyone interested in helping for next year’s show should get in touch with chairman, Geoff Matthews, on 01840 214 972, or email [email protected].
