UPPER Tamar Lake Sailing Club races on Sunday May 10.

a.m.Barnwell 1.

A gentle breeze and with the sun behind the clouds, 15 boats took to the water. Sue Mullay in her Topper Topaz arrived late and unfortunately just missed the start time.

Jane Anderson in her Laser Radial got to the Dam Red mark first with Bob Sampson and crew Liz Royal close on her heels. Roger Heasman made an avoidance tack round John Buckett whilst Adeney Pooler in the Graduate had a collision with crew Nicky Buckett instructing him to do penalty turns!

As the boats ran to Inlet Emily Veal in the Laser 4.7 was giving dad Simon in the fully rigged Laser a hard time going up to Far, whilst Fraser Martyn became becalmed at Inlet. Adeney meanwhile had become the filling of a sandwich between the Toppers of Vicky and John Duncalf.

Jane Anderson headed the fleet at the end of the first lap followed by Bob and Liz with the trio of Roger Heasman Mike Ford and Simon Veal in pursuit. Derek Farnfield in his new Streaker was really starting to move well, followed by a frisson of Alan Comber's Enterprise, John Buckett's Bosun and Emily Veal's Laser. Adeney had also joined the group by managing to leave the magnetic attraction of the Toppers.

On the second lap the wind dropped and the Toppers of John and Vicky suffered, with Fraser labouring to get around dam buoy. Jane Anderson still with Bob and Liz still on her heels, managed to create a substantial lead. Simon got through into third, with Derek passing Mike for fourth. Alan with his new crew Ellie in the Enterprise working well together started to make a move, whilst John Chandler in the Bosun and John Buckett in the Otter both sailed smoothly.

According to the Race Officer lap three became 'all a bit sedate'! Well done especially Emily and Fraser who worked really hard in the Laser 4.7s.

Result: 1st, Jane Anderson Laser Radial; 2nd, John Buckett Otter; 3rd, Bob Sampson and Liz Royal RS200; 4th, Derek Farnfield Streaker; 5th, Mike Ford Solo; 6th, John Chandler Bosun; 7th, Simon Veal Laser; 8th, Vicky Duncalf Topper; 9th, Emily Veal Laser 4.7; 10th, John Duncalf Topper; 11th, Alan Comber and Ellie Kinsella Enterprise; 12th, Roger Heasman Laser Radial; 13th, Adeney Pooler and Nicky Buckett Graduate; 14th, Fraser Martyn Laser 4.7. Sue Mullay Topper Topas DNS.

p.m. Ladies, Junior, Gosling.

The fleet increased to 18 boats, with a slight course change to enable racers to give the fishermen good clearance. Jane Anderson once again set the pace, with Simon Veal getting a cracking start and chasing her all the way. Derek Farnfield also managed to stop the front runners getting too far ahead, which gave him a creditable second place on handicap.

Paul Whybrow borrowed Bob Sampson's Laser and was doing really well to hold third until just before the finish. A new boat to Paul it is obviously shorter than he thought, as he managed to fall off the stern!

Mike Ford was also doing well until his boom parted company with his goose neck leading to his retirement. Nicky Buckett switched to her Laser and although getting a slow start, managed to work her way through the fleet to finish fifth on handicap. Liz Royal took the helm in the RS200 to show Bob how the ladies do it! Jane Chadney also had a very good race and sailing with a flash new Laser Radial sail, finished third on the water and on handicap.

Sue Murray in the Topper Topaz made her first race start with the club and sailed really well to keep clear of trouble in some difficult close racing conditions.

Many thanks to John Savage, for undertaking both Assistant OOD duties. Also to John Weller for stepping in at the last moment, thereby allowing Roger Heasman to race.
