ON a very sunny Wednesday, September 9, a range of activities took place in and around Launceston in order to raise money for the Children's Hospice South West Precious Lives Appeal.
Throughout the day tea and coffee was consumed in the town as hairdressers, restaurants, Launceston & St Stephens WI and Launceston Male Voice Choir — to name a few — raised money for the 'Little Harbour' to be built at Porthpean, St Austell.
Mr and Mrs Les Baker held a coffee morning in their home and garden and Mrs Jacki Ellis-Martin invited friends to have cream teas. U3A gave the proceeds from a recent book sale and generous donations were received from various individuals.
The Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr Paul and Mrs Rosemary O'Brien supported the charity at four events during the day which started with drinking coffee in the square with other councillors, members of the local Friends Group, local shoppers and visitors.
Several hours later they finished by drinking coffee with Charlotte Parker and other members of Launceston Young Farmers who were invited to join her in the Castle Grounds for the evening.
Other events that took place earlier in the day included, Nigel and Kay Bowman of Launceston Steam Railway and Richard Ball of Newmills Farm Park, who made it possible for the staff and children at Smiley Happy People Nursery to have an enjoyable day to remember. Whilst at the same time, with the support of the nursery proprietor, Veronica Wickett and parents, raise money to help less fortunate children and families.
Following this, as the colour theme of the day was green and pink, the children at Smiley Happy People Nursery made cards using these colours to give other children at the hospice for when they need cheering up on 'not so good days'.
Judith Roberts commented on the day: "A really enjoyable and worthwhile day for all who worked so hard and participated in any way."
Two more events will take place in the near future that have been arranged by Dunheved Kensey Vale Bowling Clubs and when the final amount raised throughout the events will be announced.
