STAFF at Camelford Leisure Centre have been given the disappointing news that they may face losing their jobs as an unofficial decision has been made to close the centre.
Management were informed of this possible closure threat last Friday, by an official of the council who revealed that due to budget cuts at Cornwall Council, councillors are considering to close the town's leisure centre.
The leisure centre boasts an 18 metre indoor swimming pool; a range of activities from length swimming and aqua aerobics to children's activities; a multi-purpose sports hall; a fitness studio and outdoor tennis courts.
Deputy manager of the leisure centre, Richard Burke, explained that the centre covers "a nice catchment area of people," it is in a convenient location and many people travel just to use the pool, including from Delabole; Camelford; St Teath; Otterham; Boscastle and Tintagel.
He said: "It is a relatively new pool, only 18 years old, and is in pristine condition, there's nothing wrong with it. It serves a huge importance to the local primary schools."
Schools come from across the area to use the pool, including: St Breward; St Teath; Delabole; Camelford and Otterham.
The leisure centre is in partnership with Sir James Smith's School, Camelford, as they control the daytime usage and then the leisure centre fits in around their times with the public swimming etc.
"It would be absolutely devastating to the community," he commented.
