FINALLY, after several decades of frustration for drivers, the works being carried out by Kier on the A30 across Bodmin Moor are due to be completed in July.
During a progress meeting with Cornwall Council, the construction firm confirmed that the contract is ‘due to be completed by July 13’.
The scheme started in June 2015 and since then has caused significant frustration to drivers trying to travel down the A30 westbound. By competition the work will have cost in the budgeted region of £59-million.
The date proposed is for when the site will be cleared of any and all construction activity — for example, the removal of temporary signage and site offices.
The completion of the A30’s new four-lane system is expected to occur before July 13, with the timing of this being closely monitored by the council.
Cornwall Council’s portfolio holder for transport, Bert Biscoe, said: “When it is open all the waiting and frustration will have been worth it and this will be an end to the nine mile tailbacks, uncertain deliveries and a much improved holiday experience for our visitors.”
Cornwall Council has led the A30 Temple to Higher Carblake dual carriageway scheme in partnership with the department for transport and Highways England.
The approved budget for the scheme is £59-million — this figure includes a £10-million contribution from Cornwall Council.
However, the scheme has taken longer than expected to be delivered, Kim Conchie, chief executive of Cornwall Chamber of Commerce, said: “The dualling of the A30 at Temple will provide much-needed additional capacity on Cornwall’s major road. The revised date of completion, while unfortunate, will still be in time to absorb peak season traffic and Cornish businesses in the longer-term will see the benefit of reduced travel times year-round.”
