TRAILING 12-3 at half time the Cornish All Blacks fought back to beat second placed London Scottish — whatever director of rugby Jon Hill said during the break, it worked!
The result could have been different if the visitors' fly half Simon Amor had his kicking boots on. His afternoon didn't start well as in the first minute he slipped and missed a penalty in front of the posts, he also missed another on ten minutes.
The All Blacks opened the scoring with a Tony Yapp penalty in the sixth minute when Scottish went over the top. The home team then lost their hooker Jamie Salter for an infringement in a ruck.
The visitors gained the initiative in the 14 minutes before half time with two tries.
First their No. 8 Willie Lipp was on the end of a powerful series of rucks in the corner, breaking off to crash over on the inside.
In added time again with a number of rucks in the right corner, Scottish were awarded a penalty-try when the All Blacks kicked the ball out of the ruck. This time Amor converted for 12-3 lead at the break.
Early in the second half Yapp missed a penalty but with the slope and the strong wind behind them the All Blacks soon reduced the deficit.
A series of penalties saw the ball kicked to the corner and from the lineout the All Black eight pushed the visitors back with two drives for flanker and skipper Tom Rawlings to touchdown. Yapp added a superb conversion and there were just two points in it.
After a flurry of replacements on both sides and a yellow carding for Scottish flanker Ben Lonergan came the decisive passage of play. The All Blacks won a penalty in front of the posts and Yapp landed the easy goal.
Amor missed another penalty but Scottish kept looking for a way through.
In added time Scottish laid seige to the home line. The All Blacks kept conceding penalties which fortunately for them the Scots kept running. There were endless series of scrums and lineouts but the All Blacks defended doggedly and won a turn-over and kicked the ball dead to all round applause.
A win to remember.
