TO commemorate 100 years of the Women’s Institute, Camelford members thought it would be appropriate to mark the milestone by planting a tree in Enfield Park.
As part of their programme the WI members have coffee mornings each month in different locations. In October they visited the Duchy Nurseries at Lostwithiel for advice on tree height when full grown, spread, colour, etc.
They were shown many trees and after a vote they chose an Acer — a species called October Glory. Members said its colour, as the name suggests, was stunning. All its leaves were bright red.
The planting took place last Thursday in the presence of mayor Cllr Rob Rotchell and Cllrs Shirley Goodman, Kirsty Ferguson and Andy Shaw and many members of Camelford WI.
Margaret Mabson planted the tree, Kate Neall read out a poem by Joyce Kilmer called ‘Trees’ and the members sang Jerusalem.
Camelford WI member and programme secretary Rita Wright said: “We hope as the years go by this tree will flourish and be a valuable addition to our lovely Enfield Park and be a permanent reminder of the first 100 years of the WI.”
